President Obama Wins Nobel Peace Prize

On October 9, 2009, the Norwegian Nobel Committee awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for 2009 to the President of the United States, Barack Obama, for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples.
In its announcement, the Committee noted that as a result of Obama’s effort, “multilateral diplomacy has regained a central position, with emphasis on the role that United Nations and other international institutions can play.” The Committee went on to say that “dialogue and negotiations are preferred as instruments for resolving even the most difficult international conflicts.”
